Indigenous Language Institute Symposium Focuses on Immersion

Indigenous Language Initiative SymposiumA two-day symposium presented by the Indigenous Language Institute will focus on involving everyone—language teachers, learners, language program administrators and staff, language activists, parents, Native American youth—in learning immersion methods for use at home, in schools and communities.

The symposium will be organized in 45-minute sessions with 15 minutes for questions and answers with no sessions occurring at the same time, so everyone can attend all sessions.

Session speakers include Mark Macarro, chairman of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, who will speak about immersion schools in communities with very few fluent speakers; Margaret Cook-Peters, a Mohawk curriculum specialist with Akwesasne Mohawk School, who will discuss multimedia tools that support Native American language immersion and immersion in the home; and Leslie Harper, the Ojibwe director/founder of Niigaane Immersion School, whose session is title A Day in the Life at Niigaane.

The film Speaking in Tongues will be shown twice during the symposium, which will be held October 24-25 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Register online at the Indigenous Language Institute website for $225 until October 24 or $150 for students and elders.
