Assistant/Associate Professor of Education Tenure-Track Faculty Position in the Educational Leadership Program with an emphasis on American Indian Leadership

The Educational Leadership Program, located in the College of Education’s Department of Education Policy Studies at Penn State University, is seeking to make a new tenure line appointment to its faculty. This search is focused on candidates with expertise in American Indian Leadership. Responsibilities for this position include directing Penn State’s American Indian Leadership Program (AILP), a program that has for over 40 years helped to train educators and educational administrators from American Indian educational and community contexts, and overseeing the Center for the Study of Leadership in American Indian Education. Established in 2007, the mission of the research center is to conduct research and outreach that helps to improve the education of American Indians and Alaska Natives at the local, state, national tribal and international levels. Applicants of particular interest include those with established records of research and administrative practice focused on American Indian contexts. Scholarship and focused on diversity in educational settings would be an additional asset.
•Direct the American Indian Leadership Program and oversee the Center for the Study of Leadership in American Indian Education;
•Teach core courses and advanced seminars for the Educational Leadership Program;
•Advise master’s and doctoral students in Educational Leadership and the American Indian Leadership Programs;
•Conduct nationally and internationally recognized research and scholarship in areas related to American Indian education and/or core disciplinary issues related to educational leadership,
•Seek and obtain external support for the AILP program and research center, and;
•Engage in service and outreach activities with appropriate audiences, including practitioners, and make strong linkages with the field for the program.
•Earned doctorate in Educational Leadership or a relevant discipline;
•Evidence of a developed or developing program of research and a record of refereed publications commensurate with academic rank;
•Background and knowledge of American Indian education issues;
•Evidence of a commitment to excellence in teaching and advising including a willingness to consider teaching in online environments, where appropriate, along with an interest in the use of modern technology, commensurate with experience;
•Evidence of a commitment to working collegially and with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and;
•Evidence of strong collaboration with and mentorship of graduate students in research and/or evaluation efforts commensurate with academic rank.
•Evidence of successful efforts to obtain external resources to support research and teaching;
•Evidence of a strong commitment to public service, and;
•Evidence of collaboration across academic disciplines.

The College of Education

Department of Education Policy Studies (EPS)
The Educational Leadership Program is housed in the Department of Education Policy Studies, which includes four degree-granting programs: Higher Education, College Student Affairs, Educational Theory and Policy, and Educational Leadership (where this position is situated). The Department also shares two other programs: American Indian Leadership and Comparative International Education.
Educational Leadership Program
Penn State’s Educational Leadership Program [http://www.ed.psu.edu/edldr/] prepares master’s and doctoral students capable of researching, analyzing, and managing the critical issues and concerns facing elementary and secondary education in the United States and internationally.
Ranked as the seventh Educational Leadership program in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, the program offers doctoral and master`s degrees in Educational Leadership and a joint graduate degree program with the Dickinson School of Law. Additionally, the program provides the Principal and Superintendent Certification Programs, which are fully accredited by the State of Pennsylvania and NCATE. Educational Leadership faculty members serve as editors or associate editors for seven academic journals, including the American Journal of Education, Journal of Research in Rural Education, and Education Finance and Policy [http://www.ed.psu.edu/educ/eps/edldr/journals]. Several centers are operated out of the program by its faculty, including the Center for the Study of Leadership and Ethics, Center on Rural Education and Communities, American Indian Leadership Research Center, and the Pennsylvania School Study Council.
American Indian Leadership Program
Penn State’s American Indian Leadership Program (http://www.ed.psu.edu/educ/eps/ailp) began in the summer of 1970 with 15 American Indian students from a variety of states. In the ensuing 42 years the program has over 240 graduates with doctoral and master’s degrees, as well as administrative certification. The AILP Program is designed to educate and develop qualified leaders and administrators for tribal and public schools serving American Indian students, and for other organizations, colleges, institutions or governments agencies concerned with the education of American Indian students. The program has been highly successful, as its graduates have gone on to leadership positions at colleges and universities, elementary and secondary schools, and federal and state agencies throughout the country. In addition, the AILP in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Leadership in American Indian Education (http://www.ed.psu.edu/educ/news/news-items-folder/american-indian-center) provides training in educational research and evaluation in Indian education with an emphasis on community development and policy analysis.
