JOB: THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA Department of Native Studies Assistant Professor

The Native Studies Department at the University of South Dakota invites applicants for assistant professor of linguistics with a Lakota language teaching and learning focus. This position is a nine-month term appointment.   A U.S. Department of Education grant funds the position as part of an indigenous language initiative, the Lakota Language Education Action Program (LLEAP), which is housed within the University Of South Dakota School Of Education.

The position requires a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field; ability to teach both Lakota linguistics and to teach Lakota language courses; to teach general descriptive linguistics focusing on indigenous languages to students, particularly those students majoring in the Lakota Language Teaching and Learning program; and knowledge of the Lakota language is expected. For this position, the candidate must also have a demonstrated research agenda in Native Studies, including experience working with reservation-based communities and evidence of ability to obtain external research grants.  The candidate will help implement and support the new degree program (experience with second language education curricula would be helpful).
