Lawmaker seeks to abolish American Indians as sports mascots

The federal government would pay schools to stop using nicknames, mascots or logos it considers derogatory, if a New Jersey congressman’s bill becomes law. The proposal from U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, D-6th, focuses on expunging references to American Indians and envisions a grant program that would give schools money to buy new uniforms and repaint walls.
