Lawyers for the federal government and Indian farmers who recently came to a settlement agreement involving discrimination at the U.S. Department of Agriculture have submitted memos to the court that is overseeing the case, explaining how funds would be distributed.

The joint memorandum indicates that the $680 million settlement will be distributed in a way that’s simpler than a previous settlement that involved African-American farmers.

The Indian plaintiffs’ lawyer Joseph M. Sellers, a partner at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, PLLC, has estimated that class members could begin receiving payments by the end of 2011.

For that to happen, the agreement must gain federal court approval and then a series of administrative steps would have to occur to determine actual remuneration.
