Let’s Play Two: Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend Kicks Off With Back-to-Back Semifinal Tests

Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, is staging its annual Championship Weekend August 24 and 25 in Boston. Four teams have survived the regular season and will clash to determine who’s the best of the best.

The action kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Long Island Lizards (8 wins-6 losses) meet the top-seeded Denver Outlaws (11-3). Then at 4 p.m., the defending champion Boston Cannons (9-5) face the Chesapeake Bayhawks (10-4). Both games will be played at Harvard Stadium. The winners will face off in the final, also at Harvard Stadium, at 3 p.m. on Sunday for the title.

The Bayhawks split their two games with the Cannons this season, and the clubs have met in the semifinals the last two years, splitting those as well. Chesapeake eliminated Boston in 2010, with the Cannons returning the favor last year.  Rivalries are built in the playoffs (see Detroit Red Wings v. Colorado Avalanche in NHL hockey), and this rubber match should be a thriller as the Bayhawks look to knock out the Cannons on their home field.

In two head-to-heads in 2012, the Lizards and the Outlaws each won one, most recently a Long Island defeat of the mighty Outlaws on June 23. Although Denver is a decided favorite in this match, any club that has Jim Brown, the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back, National Lacrosse Hall of Famer and Syracuse University legend, on their side surely won’t go down easily: Brown is a part owner of the Lizards. If things don’t go so well, you can bet many fans will be half seriously suggesting that Brown suit up and take the field—even at age 76.
