Lucy Lawless Occupies Arctic-bound Drilling Ship in New Zealand Port

Lucy Lawless, the actress famous for playing the heroine of Xena: Warrior Princess, has joined Greenpeace activists in occupying the drilling ship Noble Discoverer, The Australian reports.

The Noble Discoverer, as we reported yesterday, has been granted approval by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to drill for oil in Arctic waters off Alaska. An Alaska Native environmental group, REDOIL, has joined with other organizations in a lawsuit aimed at thwarting that effort over emissions by the Noble Discoverer and its 12-ship flotilla. The company hiring the Noble Discoverer is Shell Oil.

Lawless, who was born in New Zealand, is trying for the same result in a much different way, on the other side of the world. She and Greenpeace activists have set up camp on the ship, which is currently docked in New Zealand’s Port Taranaki, with enough supplies to last for several days. According to an article in the New Zealand Herald, the police have said Lawless and the other six occupiers are “clearly breaking the law.”

Lawless says she does not care if she is arrested.

“I’m here today acting on behalf of the planet and my children,” she said in a widely circulated Greenpeace statement. “Deep sea oil drilling is bad enough, but venturing into the Arctic, one of the most magical places on the planet, is going too far. … I don’t want my kids to grow up in a world without these extraordinary places intact or where we ruin the habitat of polar bears for the last drops of oil.”
