Mohegan Authority CEO Asked to Speak On Potential Western Massachusetts Casino

Mitchell Etess, Mohegan Sun CEO

The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, operators of the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut and Pocono Downs in Plains Township, Pennsylvania, has reportedly been pursuing a western Massachusetts casino for some time.

Banking on the state legalizing casinos, the gaming authority has sought a gaming license in Massachusetts and optioned property in Palmer, reported

Now two groups in support of the tribe’s casino plans invited the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority CEO Mitchell Grossinger Etess to speak at their next meeting, potentially created out of concerns that Holyoke, another western Massachusetts town, will get a casino license instead, reported the Norwich Bulletin.

Palmer Businesses for a Palmer Casino and Citizens for Jobs and Growth in Palmer asked Etess to speak on May 23 or 24 or June 6 or 7, reported the Bulletin.

“We believe it is timely for you to meet with our groups,” the Palmer associations said in a letter dated May 10. “We will continue to enlist the help of the citizenry to assist in the endeavor of securing community support for this project.”

In unrelated news, the Mohegan Tribe also recently partnered with Concord Associates to develop a $600 million casino and racing facility in the New York Catskills, reported the Associated Press. The casino, slated to open by spring 2013, will be built on the site of the historic Concord Hotel. The premiere destination from the ’50s and ’60s in the Borscht Belt shut down in 1998 and was demolished in 2008, according to the AP.
