NAFSA Encourages Natives to Turn Out for November Elections

The Native American Financial Services Association (NAFSA) is urging eligible Native Americans to show up at the polls this November. A NAFSA press release cites bipartisan political analysts who have stressed Native voters in key battleground states have the power to sway the election.

NAFSA identifies these swing states as Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada and Wisconsin, but a recent Rocky Mountain Poll would add Arizona to that list. Still, one caution from the survey is that not enough Latino and American Indian voters will actually cast a ballot.

“The power that the 562 federally recognized tribes across America hold is enormous,” Barry Brandon, executive director of NAFSA, said in the press release. “The effective mobilization of this constituency will produce the largest Native American vote in American history—making clear the loud and unified voice that our elected officials ignore at their peril.”

NAFSA, which formed in 2012, provides short term financial services to tribal governments, enabling them to offer responsible online lending products.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, NAFSA member tribes will assist tribal members with getting involved and staying informed, and encourage them to vote. NAFSA and its participating tribes aim to shed light on the issues that have an impact on Native Americans in their area and around the nation.

Voter registration deadlines are quickly approaching in states across the U.S. Native Americans who would like to vote but have yet to register can complete the National Mail Voter Registration Form.
