National Indigenous Women’s Organization to Host Training

The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, Inc. (NIWRC), in conjunction with the Haudenosaunee Coalition for Women’s Empowerment (HCWE), will conduct a Region 4 training, “Honoring Mother Earth: Healing Ourselves, Healing Our Communities,” in Syracuse, New York, August 8 to 10. Participants will network, build advocacy skills, address trauma in tribal communities and strengthen sovereignty to increase safety for Indian women and children.

“We are very excited to offer this training in Haudenosaunee territory,” said Lucy Simpson, NIWRC executive director. “The nations of the Haudenosaunee are renowned for their matrilineal leadership and strong traditions. We can all learn from the Haudenosaunee people about honoring our mothers and strengthening our tribal communities.”

Among the guest speakers are Lisa Brunner, executive director of Sacred Spirits First Nations Coalition, as well as Carrie Garrow and Amie Barnes, president and executive director, respectively, of HCWE. Joining them are Konon:kwe Council founders Katsi Cook, renowned aboriginal midwife; Beverly Cook, Akwesasne community health leader; and Karonienhawi Thomas, special investigator with the St. Regis Mohawk Police Department.

“It’s important to integrate our traditional ways into our contemporary lives,” said Beverly Cook. “The fire that held us together was nearly extinguished. We’re trying to gather that fire back up again.”

NIWRC has received approval from the Office on Violence against Women (OVW)for this regional training. Guests who plan to attend this training and want to use OVW funds are encouraged to do so.
