Native Hawaiians to Form Unrecognized Government

According to an Associated Press report, Native Hawaiians plan to start forming their own government even though federal legislation has failed to grant them the right to self-governance enjoyed by all other indigenous peoples in the United States. The Akaka Bill, which would federally recognize Native Hawaiians, did not receive a vote in Congress in 2010, and is not likely to in the 2011 session. Clyde Namuo, CEO for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, sees the formation of a Native Hawaiian government as preparatory work for the day the Akaka Bill does go before Congress. “You’ll still need the federal bill at some point,” Namuo said. “But when you go before Congress, you will already have a government in place, and you will then ask the Congress to recognize that government. That’s the idea.”
