Eastern Shawnee Man Fighting for Custody of Boy Caged by Mother

Eastern Shawnee tribal member Kevin Nelson only recently learned that he is the biological father of a 5-year-old boy, whose mother has been charged with child abuse for allegedly locking the boy in a wire dog cage for up to 14 hours a day.

Nelson, a father to two children, ages 1 and 3, with his wife in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is now fighting for full custody of his son, reported newson6.com.

"I'm dying to see him and dying to meet him," Nelson told the local news outlet. "I want to meet him bad."

The Department of Human Services notified Nelson a couple of months ago that he had a son with his former girlfriend Suzanne Satterfield, 33. Unaware that Satterfield had even been pregnant, Nelson requested a DNA test.

Very recently, the results came back confirming he is the father.

Satterfield and her live-in boyfriend Johnathan Lee, 31, were both charged with child abuse on March 25, with Lee facing an additional count of sexual abuse against Satterfield's 14-year-old daughter, reported The Huffington Post. Satterfield is also charged with permitting child abuse. Three children, ages 4, 7 and 14, lived in the home and have since been placed in protective custody.

Lee allegedly told deputies that the couple kept the boy in the cage over night, during naptime and for disciplinary puropses. Once he learned how to escape, the pair allegedly restrained the boy inside the cage with plastic handcuffs and padlocked the cage, reported the New York Daily News. The couple sought to prevent the boy from touching the exposed electrical wires in the bedroom, the stepfather said.

While watching the news, Nelson heard about a mother who kept her toddler in a cage, and was outraged. When he later found out that the boy is his son, he was devastated, he said.

"I'm upset. That somebody could do that to a child and now I find out it's my son. I want justice," Nelson said.

Nelson hopes the Eastern Shawnee Tribe will help him fight for full-custody of his son.
