Human Remains Found on Tohono O’odham Nation

 

On May 3, The Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department released a statement following the findings of human remains west of Sells, Arizona.

The statement given by Chief Joseph Delgado stated, “The Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department can confirm that on the morning of May 28, 2013, federal agents with the U.S. Border patrol discovered the remains of five individuals on the Tohono O’odham Nation, approximately 12 miles northwest of Sells, Arizona.

The remains were found in a rocky desert area near South Mountain, approximately 10 miles south of Highway 86. Based on the conditions at the scene, the deaths of the five individuals have been categorized as suspicious. The investigation is being led by the Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.

According to kvoa.com the remains were taken to the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office, where forensic testing will be done this week.

Sources told kvoa.com that the positioning of the skeletal remains were positioned is not consistent with people who have succumbed to the elements leading the case to be called suspicious.

Kvoa.com also reported that animal activity had scattered some of the remains, but the majority of them were found in one area and included the remains of a woman. The Mexican consulate had been contacted as paperwork was found near the scene.

There is no further information available at this time. The investigation is ongoing.”
