Police officer Houston Largo, a 27-year-old Navajo, was slain after encountering two individuals in a vehicle late at night

Funeral services are scheduled for tomorrow for a Navajo Nation police officer who was shot and killed during the line of duty early March 12 near Prewitt, New Mexico, authorities said. Houston James Largo, 27, was critically wounded when he encountered two individuals sitting a vehicle late at night after he responded to a domestic violence call. An unidentified woman used Largo’s radio to call for assistance, ABC News reported.

According to the FBI, Largo was flown to the University of Mexico hospital where he died, The Farmington Daily Times reported.

“We are very grateful for his service and we hope and pray that his family and fellow officers are comforted knowing that their loved one is now with the Creator and no longer in harms way,” Lorenzo Bates, Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council, said in a press release. “The Navajo Nation was truly blessed to have Officer Largo serve and protect our communities.”

The identities of the two suspects have not been released, but after an immediate manhunt at least one of the suspects was arrested. On March 14, a candlelight vigil was held in Largo’s honor. Navajo Nation Vice President Jonathan M. Nez took to Twitter and posted photos of the gathering. “He will be missed,” Nez said.

Edmund Yazzie, the Chair of the Law and Order Committee, extended his condolences to Largo’s family, and acknowledged that domestic violence is a “major problem in many Navajo communities that has plagued the Navajo Nation for years.”

“Unfortunately, many of our officers face this devastating issue every day when they are on duty and sadly it resulted in the loss of one of our bravest today,” Yazzie said in a press release. “The family and all of our officers have our complete support as we grieve together.”

Largo had a been with the Navajo Nation Police Department for four years, six months, and 13 days, and was a decorated Senior Police Officer at the time of his passing, The Navajo Police Department said in a press release.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. March 16 at Rehoboth Christian School Sports Center in Rehoboth, Navajo Police said. A memorial fund was set by Largo’s family at Wells Fargo under “Officer Houston J. Largo.”

The case is still under investigation, the FBI said.

Since 1975, the Navajo Nation has lost 13 officers in the line of duty, ABC News reported.
