Russell Means’s Widow Files Lawsuit Claiming Negligence by His Doctors

The Associated Press reported Monday, June 23 that Pearl Means, the widow of longtime Native American activist Russell Means has filed a lawsuit in New Mexico.

The widow is accusing doctors of overlooking her late husband’s esophageal cancer. She filed the lawsuit in state District Court in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and calls specifically on doctors who work at clinics owned by Santa Fe’s Christus St. Vincent Medical Center according to reports in the Santa Fe New Mexican.

Once called the most famous American Indian since Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse by the Los Angeles Times, the early leader of the American Indian Movement walked on at the age of 72 on October 22, 2012.

Lawyers for the hospital have denied any wrongdoing according to court documents.

“Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Russell C. Means for their loss of a Loved one,” Arturo Delgado, Christus St. Vincent spokesman, said.
