Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Member Killed by Speeding Driver in Fiery Head-On Car Wreck

One man is dead and another injured after a high-speed, head-on car collision on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation late Monday, according to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes.

“On Monday evening, October 7, 2013 around 9:47 PM, the Fort Hall Police received a call of a reckless driver on highway 91 heading north at a high rate of speed,” the tribes said in a statement. “Before officers could locate the high-speed driver, the driver crashed head-on into another vehicle near the Broncho road intersection on U.S. 91 driven by tribal member Richard ‘Tazzy’ Peyope.”

Peyope, 45, died at the scene, the statement said.

“Both vehicles caught fire, and officers were able to get one male driver out of the vehicle,” the tribes said, quoting the police report.

The speeding driver, in a 1992 Buick, was identified by Idaho State Police as 39-year-old Jody Underwood, of Blackfoot. He was air-lifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC) in Idaho Falls and later to the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, his condition unavailable on Tuesday.

The highway was completely blocked during the investigation but has been reopened.

“The Fort Hall Police Department (FHPD) is leading the investigation and is still working on the case,” the Shoshone Bannock said. “Once the investigation is complete, a report will be submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s office for possible federal charges against Underwood. Further information will be released as received by FHPD and FBI.”
