Sycuan Tribal Member Killed in Shooting; Tribe Offers $50,000 Reward

On the morning of May 5, Xusha Brown Jr., a Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation member, was shot and killed on Interstate 8 near SR-125 in La Mesa, California according to the LaMesa-MountHelix Patch.

At a press conference on May 6, Capt. David Bond of the La Mesa Police Department said that it was likely gang-related and that the investigation was ongoing.

He also noted that the victims, Brown and Malcolm Hune, 21, who was driving, were not known gang members at this time.

“Based on the evidence, we are hopeful and confident that we are going to solve this homicide, but as far as a particular person, right now, no,” Brown said when asked if they have a good idea of who the suspect(s) are according to the Patch.

A $50,000 reward is being offered for any information on the case that leads to an arrest and conviction. The money was donated by the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

“The senseless murder of young Xusha Brown Jr. offends the conscience,” Sycuan Chairman Daniel Tucker said in a statement. “Our tribe is committed to doing whatever we can to help apprehend and convict the person or persons responsible for this terrible crime.”
