The Week That Was: The Big Stories in Indian Country, December 8, 2013

It's our weekly roundup of the stories that mattered most in Indian country:

FAREWELL TO A LEADER: Indian country joined the rest of the world in mourning the death of Nelson Mandela, who died on Thursday at the age of 95

NOT FUNNY: A Thanksgiving-themed t-shirt, depicting a smiling man in Pilgrim garb aiming a shotgun at a Native woman in skimpy clothing who is on her knees, landed the metal band Mastodon in hot water.

NOT AGAIN: A Parisian auction house plans to sell sacred Hopi katsinam (commonly referred to as "masks" by non-Natives) despite objections from the tribe — it's deja vu for concerned Natives who couldn't prevent a similar "heartbreaking" auction from proceeding in April.

BIG BUCKS: Jacoby Ellsbury is poised to sign a seven-year, $153 million contract with the New York Yankees. The deal will make him the third-highest paid outfielder in Major League Baseball history.

BUT SERIOUSLY: Standup comedian Charlie Hill is suffering from cancer, and is reaching out to fans for help.

MUST-WATCH: A music video filmed on the Blackfeet Reservation drew some initial criticism for its depiction of drug use and a sundance ceremony, but as more Natives watched the clip, many were of the opinion that the video was tasteful and powerful.

MILLS TO BE HONORED: The NCAA announced Friday morning that Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills is to receive the Theodore Roosevelt Award which is given annually to an individual “for whom competitive athletics in college and attention to physical well-being thereafter have been important factors in a distinguished career of national significance and achievement."
