Tribal leaders and members of the USET health, social service and tribal justice committees unanimously voted to pass an USET Resolution to establish a workgroup focused on violence against Native women at a May 17 United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. (USET) meeting in Niagara Falls, New York.
USET is inviting tribal leaders and committee members to serve on the newly created USET Violence Against Native Women Workgroup. The organization hopes to immediately engage any USET leaders and tribally designated committee representatives with expertise on the issue.
A strong advocate of women’s rights, USET has been a vocal supporter of the Stand Against Violence and Empower Native Women Act to be included in the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) since 2011.
The mission of the USET Violence Against Native Women Workgroup will be to monitor policy, identify best practices, provide technical assistance and offer public education and awareness to USET Tribes on issues concerning domestic, sexual and dating violence, stalking and sex trafficking. Further, the workgroup will be tasked with coordinating member Tribes for issue-driven government-to-government consultations, identifying federal funding reauthorization opportunities, and making recommendations to the USET board of directors on issue specific initiatives.
Tribal Leaders and Committee Members interested in serving on the newly forming Violence Against Native Women Workgroup should submit their name and contact information to Wanda Janes, USET deputy director (firstname.lastname@example.org) by July 19, 2013. An initial conference call will be scheduled during the week of July 29 to discuss a framework for moving forward; what VAWA means for USET Tribes; VAWA implementation; interaction with the National Congress of American Indians Task Force on VAWA, the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and other organizations. Of upmost importance is facilitation of comments for an Office on Violence Against Women consultation scheduled for October 31, as this date conflicts with the USET 2013 Annual Meeting.
