What did Native Americans think of the Pocahontas Wedding?

On Saturday April 5, 2014 in Historic Jamestowne and exactly 400 years after the original wedding, actors and visitors celebrated a historical reenactment of the wedding of Pocahontas to John Rolfe.

Yes, there were hundreds of onlookers present on the wedding day. However, there were also several tribal members from tribes in Virginia to include the Pamunkey and Patawomeck. So watch as ICTMN’s Man on the Street Vincent Schilling explores the Native perspective.

According to some tribal members from the Pamunkey, they were a bit put off by the use of the term savage, Ashley Atkins (Pamunkey) says she understood savage was certainly a term used back then, she would “have liked to see a bit of countered language from the Native side.”

All said, Atkins and others were all glad to see Pocahontas portrayed by a Native Pamunkey.
