Wind River, one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the year is a thriller starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen alongside an all-star Native cast—Gil Birmingham, Graham Greene, Julia Jones, Tantoo Cardinal and the cover star of Indian Country’s August-September 2017 issue, Martin Sensmeier.

The exclusive, wide-ranging interview (conducted by A&E Editor Vincent Schilling) is Sensmeier as you’ve never seen him before. In a thoughtful, appreciative manner he reflects on the twists and turns of life that brought him from a small Native village to his break-out role in last year’s The Magnificent Seven. In the article, The Magnificent One, he traces his path on what at first glance is an impossible journey, from his first job out of high school as a welder, followed by time spent on an oil rig, and then acting and modeling gigs as he pursued his dream. Now comes his gritty role in Wind River, which is poised to position him as one of the most interesting young actors in Hollywood. Even so, he’ll never let himself forget where he came from—he’s one of the most active members of a new generation of Native talents determined to give back to his community.
“I feel so blessed that I get to visit so many Native communities,” he tells Indian Country’s Vincent Schilling, who conducted the interview. “I didn’t necessarily have that when I was a kid. There were no Native actors traveling to Alaska to talk to us when I was growing up.”
