Navajo Nation Council Members Accused of Fraud

In an Associated Press story released July 29, a lawsuit has been filed against 78 current and former Navajo Nation Council members alleging massive fraud in the use of $36 million in discretionary funds.

The funds are a part of budgetary appropriations the Navajo Nation receives on a yearly basis to be spread among elderly Navajos on fixed incomes, college students, organizations in need or emergency funding.

In the lawsuit filed July 28, the council members are accused of taking the funds to benefit themselves and their families from 2005 through 2010.

The lawsuit accuses former Navajo president Joe Shirley Jr. of supporting appropriations while knowing its intended use.
