Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprises CEO Says Smoking Ban Would Kill Casino Plans

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly recently signed a commercial tobacco-free executive order to ban smoking in its casinos, reported the Phoenix Business Journal on April 26.

But the CEO of the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise says if the order becomes effective, the Twin Arrows casino and resort slated to rise near Flagstaff, Arizona, in mid-June 2012, according to the Associated Press, will not be built, reported the Journal on April 27.

The Navajo Nation operates two New Mexico-based casinos: Fire Rock Casino, its first casino which opened in November of 2008, and the Flowing Water Casino. Health experts have praised Shelly for stamping out smoking in the workplace and his efforts to ban it in the tribe’s casinos.

The Navajo Nation’s Twin Arrows casino and resort would be the first smoke-free casino in Arizona, Dr. Leland Fairbanks, told the Journal. Fairbanks played a significant role in making Arizona’s workplaces smoke-free a few years back. Fairbanks is a member of Team Navajo, a group of health advocates and organizations working diligently to make casinos smoke-free.
