Obama Administration Will Reject Keystone XL Pipeline

The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration will announce today that it is rejecting TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

The extent of the “rejection”—whether this rejection is more accurately described as merely a delay—is not yet known; there are at least two finer points to be considered. The Los Angeles Times states that “it’s unclear whether the administration will reject the pipeline project outright or will revert to the longer timeline that it announced in November, which calls for a final decision to be made in early 2013.”

And according to the Washington Post item, “the administration will allow TransCanada to reapply after it develops an alternate route through the sensitive habitat of Nebraska’s Sandhills.” That statement would imply that while the administration takes issue with the Nebraska sandhills portion of the proposed route, it is not opposed to the Keystone XL pipeline in the main.
