Obama to Leaders: U.S. Will Back Declaration

President Obama has told Native American leaders that the United States will support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Associated Press reports. The move is a reversal of previous national policy; in 2007, under President George W. Bush, the U.S. was one of just four countries that opposed the Declaration. Those countries, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, later chose to support the Declaration. The president also announced the creation of an Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs, to be headed by Tracey LeBeau of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota.
