Ontario’s community colleges have launched a $400,000 advertising campaign to get students interested in pursuing higher learning.
“Break your own Trail … with a college education” is the name of the campaign, according to the Toronto Star, and it was designed by the Native advertising agency Spirit Creative. The campaign includes posters, newspaper and radio ads and fliers sent to the remote reserves, accessible only by air, which is where students first start falling behind in school, the Toronto Star noted.
“A lot of them struggle with English and have financial problems and they can be a long way from home, but if I can do it, anyone can,” Belinda Sayeau, a native from northern Ontario told the Toronto Star. She should know, having earned a business diploma from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, and received the Colleges Ontario Award for Student Excellence this year, the Star said. She now works at the college in the office for First Nations students.
An elder and a drummer from the Native community took part in the ad campaign’s April 18 launch at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto. It was also attended by Training, Colleges and Universities Minister John Milloy; Linda Franklin, the president and CEO of Colleges Ontario, and Sylvia Barnard, the president of Cambrian College in Sudbury, according to a press release from the schools.
