Panel Wants Constitution to Better Recognize Australian Aboriginals

On January 18, an announcement came that could be beneficial to Australian aboriginals. An Australian panel, suggested the country make changes to its constitution to better recognize its indigenous population according to an article at CNN.com.

Support for the changes is growing among the political realm of the country and a national referendum on the constitution has been promised on or before the next federal election, due in 2013 according to an article by the Australian Associated Press.

The AAP article quotes Pat Dodson, aboriginal leader and panel co-chair, as saying, “We look forward to a nation that acknowledges its history, its heritage, in its founding document. We look forward to a nation who stands up to be counted as opponents to racism.”

Despite the announcement the road towards this possible revamp has many obstacles ahead of it.
