Pixar to Make Day of the Dead Movie

The Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, laden with indigenous tradition, will star in a movie made by Pixar, the animation studio has announced.

The makers of Toy Story 3, Director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson, will create the movie, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Pixar announced the project at the CinemaCon convention of theater owners in Las Vegas last week, the LA Times said.

“Pixar revealed little else about the Día de los Muertos movie, which will presumably  take many visual cues from the spooky holiday’s focus on skulls, masks and Mexican marigolds,” The Los Angeles Times said. No release date was given for the movie.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a renowned holiday whose roots lie in pre-contact society of what is today Mexico. It is the day on which the door between the spirit world and ours opens, and the dead come back to visit their loved ones. It is a religious holiday during which families create altars in their homes to honor the dead and visit them in the cemeteries, decorating the graves and often tarrying into the night.

The holiday is celebrated mainly in Mexico and Central America, though many honor the dead on those days throughout Latin America. More about the real Day of the Dead is here: A tour of the holiday’s permutations around the U.S. in “Day of the Dead, Part II: Re-Made in America,” a world tour with “Day of the Dead, Part III: Blending Traditions” and a video extravaganza.

Here’s hoping the movie captures the magic.
