Bill John Baker Reelected to Lead Cherokee Nation

Nearly 20,000 Cherokee Nation citizens showed up to polls on June 27 to reelect Principal Chief Bill John Baker to another four-year term according to unofficial 2015 General Election voting results.

Baker took 9,786 of 18,583 votes or 52.6 percent negating the need for a run-off election.

On Monday, June 29, the Cherokee Nation Election Commission certified the results of Baker’s reelection along with the reelection of Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden. Crittenden finished with 11,436 votes or 63 percent.

According to the Election Commission about 62,000 Cherokee citizens are registered vote. More than 2,000 participated in early voting and 11,000 requested absentee ballots. Overall those voting had 36 candidates across all seats up for election.

The Election Commission also certified eight Tribal Council races that included current District 3 Tribal Councilor David Walkingstick and District 12 Tribal Councilor Dick Lay winning reelection. Other winners included Rex Jordan winning District 1; Shawn Crittenden winning District 8; and former Tribal Councilor Buel Anglen winning District 13.

There will be a run-off election on July 25 for District 6 and At-Large races the Election Commission announced. Natalie Fullbright, who garnered 618 votes or 44 percent, will be opposed by Bryan Warner, who received 501 votes or 36 percent. Wanda Hatfield will face Betsy Swimmer in the At-Large race. Hatfield received 1,057 votes or 26 percent, while Swimmer earned 770 votes or 19 percent in Saturday’s election.

In District 14, candidates William Pearson and Keith Austin were separated by one vote showing Pearson with 534 and Austin with 533. Austin late Monday submitted a formal recount request to the Election Commission well ahead of the July 1 deadline. Officials are hoping a recount will be completed by July 2.
