In a somewhat surprising victory, newcomer Bryan Brewer has defeated Oglala Sioux Tribe Presidential incumbent John Yellow Bird Steele in the 2012 presidential election on the Pine Ridge reservation.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe Election Commission posted the official results from the November 6 election on November 14. The final results were Brewer with 2,464 votes while Steele had 2,271, a difference of 138 votes.
Though the results are official, members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe have until November 16th to challenge the election results. On November 19 will be the official result in which Brewer is expected to retain the win from Steele.
When speaking to Indian Country Today Media Network, Bryan Brewer said he felt optimistic but recognized there were challenges to be faced in the upcoming two years of office.
“I feel good,” said Brewer. “The term of office is two years and it is going to be a lot of work. But it is going to be good and I am anxious for it. I am anxious to work with the Tribal Council and the program directors – and everyone else. I am also anxious to work with the people in their districts.”
In addition to Brewer as President, Tom Poor Bear has held on to his position as Vice-President having defeated William “Shorty” Brewer. Poor Bear captured 2,633 votes to William Brewer’s 2,094 votes.
