Republican Congressman to Constituents: ‘Bull Crap’ That You Pay My Salary

Markwayne Mullin: 'This is a service. No one here pays me to go'

Republican Congressman, Markwayne Mullin said during a town hall in Oklahoma that it’s “bull crap” that constituents pay his congressional salary.

“You said you pay for me to do this. Bull crap. I pay for myself,” Markwayne Mullin, a Cherokee, said to a constituent in the town of Jay. “I paid enough taxes before I ever got there and continue to through my company to pay my own salary … This is a service. No one here pays me to go. I do it as an honor and service. This is a service for me, not a career, and I thank God this is not how I make my living.”

The unidentified town hall-goer had questioned the third-term congressman about the Affordable Care Act and health care in general in the U.S. “That’s not my job, I pay you to figure that one out,” the man said after discussing mandates, as seen in this video.

The yearly salary of a U.S. Senator and House Representative is currently $174,000; this number has remained unchanged since 2009, according to the U.S. government.

Amy Lawrence, communications director for Congressman Mullin, told the Tulsa World he was referencing the taxes his companies pay “which contribute to congressional salaries.”

“The congressman is referencing the federal taxes that he and his businesses have paid to the government over the years, prior to his being in office,” Lawrence told the Tulsa World.

Mullin, the chair of President Donald Trump’s Native American Coalition, made news recently when he scolded a woman at another one of his town halls. The unidentified woman had hoisted a red paper while sitting in the front row. Constituents have lately brought green and red pieces of paper to town halls with bans on placards to express their approval or opposition with an elected officials’ position on subjects.

Although reports circulated that Mullin had ordered police to remove the woman, in an email to Indian Country Media Network, Lawrence said the “congressman didn’t have the woman removed, nor did he ever ask law enforcement officials to remove her. The Congressman actually asked the law enforcement not to remove her after the Mayor of Pryor signaled law enforcement to intervene.”
