The Sealaska board of directors announced their endorsement of Mark Begich for U.S. Senate; Byron Mallott for Governor of the State of Alaska; and Sam Kito III as Representative for House District 32 – all Democrats.
Sealaska studies and identifies candidates who are best qualified to contribute to thriving communities in Southeast Alaska and to the success of all Alaskans, which was the basis for Sealaska’s endorsement of Lisa Murkowski in 2010.
The core Native values that guide Sealaska’s activities include Haa Latseen, which is Tlingit for our strength and leadership. As Sealaska works on innovative solutions to economic development and healthy communities, candidates who can best lead the charge to prosperity earn Sealaska’s support.
The qualities of each candidate that earned Sealaska’s 2014 endorsement include the seniority and effectiveness of Begich; the long term involvement in rural and Native issues and the business acumen of Mallott; and the representation on Southeast and Alaska Natives that Kito III brings to the Alaska State Legislature.
“We believe Begich, Mallott and Kito have proven track records on issues important to our region,” said Sealaska board chair Joe Nelson. “They are Alaska’s leadership of experience.”
