Here at Indian Country Today Media Network, we like a little pow wow action in our weekends. We’ve put together a little list of some pow wows that are taking place this weekend all around the country. So if you’ve got some time on your hands for tasty food, lively music, vibrant dances and stunning art, these are the events for you.
20th Annual Native American Arts Festival, Arizona
When & Where: January 7th – January 8th at Scout Park in Litchfield Park, Arizona
This weekend event will begin at 10am and end at 4pm each day. The day will be centralized around native art created by some of the best Native American artists in the Southwest. Exhibits will include traditional and contemporary Native American jewelry, pottery, basketry, weaving, katsinas, paintings, and beadwork. For more information about this event, click here.

Tecumseh Lodge Mid Winter Pow Wow, Indiana
When & Where: January 7th at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana.
Saturday’s festivities will begin at 10am. There will be several traditional gourd and intertribal dances throughout the day. Your master of ceremonies will be Robb Biddinger. For more information about this event, click here.

“Honoring & Recruitment” Powwow, Colorado
When & Where: January 7th at the Denver Indian Center in Denver, Colorado.
The Denver Public School Indian Education Parent Advisory committee invites everyone to “come out and support DPS students who have attained academic achievement & perfect attendance for the first half of the school year! Also learn about DPS Focus Schools and how your student can benefit by attending in the future.” The festivities will begin at 1pm with contests, raffles, 50/50s, and plenty of food concessions and all proceeds from the event will be put toward their upcoming Senior Class Honoring Ceremony in May 2012. Thunder in the Desert, Arizona
When & Where: December 30th– January 8th at the Ira Hayes American Legion Post No. 84 Sacaton, Arizona.
Three years in the making, participants of the Thunder in the Desert powwow have been celebrating this ten-day event with several Native American arts and crafts exhibits, concerts and dances. This epic event will finalize this weekend with a three daylong competition starting at 12pm on Friday. According to their flyer, the powwow invites all to attend and “enjoy yourself – you’re on Indian time.” For more information about this event, click here.
