President Shelly Signs Law Changing Navajo Election Dates

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly made it official on February 13, moving the date for Navajos to vote in the Arizona primaries.

“I want to support Navajo voters and make it easier for them to vote,” President Shelly said during a signing ceremony at his office Monday morning.

Shelly signed into law Legislation 0414-11, making the Navajo primary election date the same as the Arizona primary election dates.

The move was a way for Shelly to encourage Navajo voters to vote in the state primaries. He said one reason he signed the legislation was citizens vote in the Navajo elections but not the Arizona primaries according to a Navajo press release.

“They think they already voted, so they don’t vote again,” the Shelly said.

During the 2010 primary elections in Apache, Navajo and Coconino counties, Arizona state officials said about 30 percent of registered voters reached the polls.

Apache county officials and council delegates were among the dozen or so people who attended the signing of the bill that was sponsored by Council Delegate Lorenzo Curley.
