Prosecutors Seek 2-Year Sentence for Abramoff Lobbyist

Federal prosecutors on Friday recommended a two-year prison sentence for Michael Scanlon, a key figure in the scandal surrounding disgraced former Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Politico reported.

Scanlon, a former aide to then-House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay, was Abramoff’s partner in a series of scams that involved defrauding Indian nations of more than $80 million in the early 2000’s, and then working against the nations on behalf of their competitors. Scanlon has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption in defrauding the tribal nations and lavishing gifts on members of Congress.

Nineteen people, including Scanlon, have been prosecuted or took pleas in the fraud and corruption scandal. Abramoff pled guilty in the fraud charges and to a bank fraud case in Florida, and he served 43 months in federal prison before being released last summer.

Scanlon is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 11 by a federal judge in Washington, D.C. In their court motion, Justice Department officials said, “The government greatly credits Scanlon for being the first one to cooperate with the government, and, consequently, considers Scanlon’s cooperation as contributing to the success of all of the prosecutions. Through dozens of debriefings Scanlon provided detailed information about his knowledge and interactions with several public officials and lobbyists which were significant parts of the investigation conducted by the FBI, the Inspector General for the Department of Interior and other agencies over many months.”

It was Native Americans, including Native American lobbyist Tom Rodgers of Carlyle Consulting, who brought forward the information that sparked the investigation into Abramoff’s activities.
