RI Governor Backpedals on Narragansett Tribe Gaming Proposal

After appearing receptive to the Narragansett Indian Tribe’s potential purchase of the Twin River Casino, a slot parlor the tribe hopes to convert into a casino resort, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee said he wants the state to commission an in-depth study of all of the state’s gambling options, reported The Providence Journal.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas plans to meet with Gov. Chafee today to discuss the gaming proposition.

The Governor’s office issued a statement that said: “Governor Chafee recognizes the importance of addressing the role of the Narragansett Indians in any expansion of gaming at Twin River,” but he is also “committed to preserving the revenue stream to the state that is provided by Twin River in its present ownership and management configuration.”
