Skokomish Artist Peterson Wins Grant, Fellowship

Skokomish artist Pete Peterson Sr. has received an Artist Trust fellowship and a $7,500 grant. He was one of 409 applicants and one of 16 selected.

Peterson was awarded a fellowship in Folk & Traditional Arts. Fellowships were awarded to other artists in Emerging & Cross-Disciplinary Arts, Performing Art, and Visual Art.

Peterson is known for his bentwood boxes, masks and other traditional carvings. He harvests wood from downed red and yellow cedar trees near his Hoodsport home, and works as close to traditional methods as possible.

The Skokomish Tribe designated Peterson a Living Cultural Treasure in 1998. He was artist in residence at The Evergreen State College Longhouse, University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Puget Sound. He received Washington State Arts Commission grants in 1998, 2000 and 2003 that enabled him to teach emerging artists. In 2008, he received a Governor’s Heritage Award, the state’s highest artistic honor. His work has received support from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Fund for Folk Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Artist Trust, a non-profit, was founded in 1986 to encourage and support individual artists working in all disciplines. Artist Trust has invested millions of dollars in career training, grants and residencies to thousands of artists since 1987. Artist Trust is online at www.artisttrust.org.
