Soapstone Prairie History

The Soapstone Prairie Natural Area Oral History Project, funded by a research grant that collected oral histories from people with ties to Fort Collins, Colorado’s Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, is a moving piece of work.

The film features Native Americans, archaeologists, and ranchers speaking about the long history (over 12,000 years!) of deep connections between the people and this 28-square mile range of grassland and wood.  From Paleoindians to Native American tribes to homesteaders and cattle and sheep ranchers, Soapstone Prairie has been on the archaeological map since the 1930s, when the Smithsonian and the Colorado Museum of Natural History began their excavations.
