Southern California Indian Center Responds to ‘Urban Siouxs Navajo Outfitters’ Piece

Southern California Indian Center, Inc. (SCIC) has the following response to an article entitled “Urban Siouxs Navajo Outfitters,” written by Cetan Wanbli Williams that appeared in the March 30, 2012 edition of Indian Country Today Media Network in the ‘The Thing About Skins.’

Paula Starr, the Executive Director of SCIC, states: “Cetan Wanbli Williams, who is an employee of SCIC, did not write the article entitled ‘Urban Siouxs Navajo Outfitters,’ which appeared in the March 30, 2012 edition of This Week From Indian Country Today magazine on behalf of SCIC, and the article does not express any opinion of SCIC on the subject matter of the article. Cetan Wanbli Williams position with SCIC does not include writing magazine articles on behalf of SCIC nor is Mr. Williams authorized to express any opinions of SCIC on matters of public interest. The opinions of SCIC are established by the Board of Directors of SCIC and any public statements of the opinions of SCIC are expressed by either the President of the Board of Directors of SCIC or by Paula Starr, the Executive Director of SCIC. If SCIC were to have an article published that would state it’s opinion on a matter the author of the article would be identified in the credits for the article as an employee, agent or representative of SCIC who has been authorized to express the opinions of SCIC on the subject matter of the article.”

Paula Starr further states, “SCIC is a strong advocate of an individual’s Constitutional Right of Freedom of Speech and the Freedom of the Press to print an individual’s opinion on matters of public interest. But, if such occurs it must be understood that the opinion’s expressed by the author who is not authorized to speak on behalf of SCIC cannot be construed by the reader of the article as stating the opinion of SCIC even if the reader knows that the author is an employee of SCIC.”
