The 2011 “Spirit of Our Nations” Billiton Cultural Celebration and Pow Wow will be welcoming four first-time pow wow dancers who will be participating in a traditional initiation ceremony and dance in their very first Grand Entry, Friday November 11, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the Credit Union Centre, Saskatoon, SK. The dancers completed an 8 week program that taught them dancing and the skills needed to make their own pow wow outfit, a Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations press release stated.
“We are really excited about bringing in new dancers to participate in the pow wow. One of the purposes of the initiation ceremony welcomes the individuals into the circle of dancers,’ says Dorothy Myo, president of the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre and chairperson of the pow wow committee. “This is a time honoured tradition that we look forward to sharing with the audience during the first Grand Entry of this year’s pow wow.”
The pow wow committee also announced a new corporate partner, BHP Billiton. BHP Billiton joins the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations as title sponsors.
“The addition of BHP Billiton to our family of sponsors is a welcome addition,” says president Myo. “BHP Billiton has set down roots in Saskatchewan’s corporate community and we’re happy they want to be a part of the province’s largest cultural gathering.”
