Spokane Tribe’s Proposed Casino Could Hurt Kalispel Tribe’s Business

The Usk, Washington-based Kalispel Tribe owns and operates Northern Quest Resort and Casino in Airway Heights–one of only three off-reservation casinos under the two-part Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) determination, reported The Spokesman-Review.

The more than 400-member Kalispel Tribe may face competition from its neighboring tribe the Spokane, if the 2,441-member tribe wins Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) approval for its proposed $400 million off-reservation casino and mixed-use development center in the West Plains, less than three miles away from Northern Quest Resort and Casino, reported NWCN.com.

The head of Citizens Against Casino Expansion, a coalition of local business owners and community members against the proposed development and casino, commented that a rival casino will hurt the Kalispel Tribe’s business and lead to employee layoffs. “I worry that either one or the other will die,” said Irv Zakheim, owner of manufacturing company Zak! Designs, reported KXLY.com.
