Julia Roberts was not spotted walking the streets of Pawhuska or Bartlesville, Oklahoma, wearing a Pawhuska t-shirt. But she’s there. Filming of August: Osage County, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, began in Bartlesville on Monday, and the stars who’ve been spotted or who are rumored to be around include Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Chris Cooper, and Abigail Breslin.
There is one Native role in the play, that of Johnna Monevata, Cheyenne, a housekeeper, who will be portrayed in the film by Misty Upham, Blackfeet. Upham has recently gained attention among Native actors for winning a substantial role in Jimmy Picard, starring Benicio del Toro.
Although the play unfolds in a single house outside of Pawhuska, principal photography for the film is said to be taking place in both Bartlesville and Pawhuska.
Meanwhile, Bartlesville is in full star-spotting mode. A story at Fox23.com reports that George Clooney was seen eating at Frank and Lola’s in Bartlesville, and shopped at Bartlesville Wine & Spirits; Juliette Lewis was seen in a Bartlesville grocery store; and Sam Shepard enjoyed a sausage scrambler for breakfast at Eggbert’s.
Osage County has the same borders as the Osage Indian Reservation; its county seat, Pawhuska, is also the capital of the Osage Nation. Bartlesville, which is in Osage and Washington Counties, is the home of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, one of the two groups of Lenape indians.
And that picture of Julia Roberts? It was mocked up by someone affiliated with the Pawhuska Oklahoma Facebook page — as was the less successful image below. (The shirt is the “Pawhuksa Oklahoma Patriotic T-shirt”.)
