A recent statewide poll found that 64 percent of voters surveyed said they favored allowing slot machines at Texas race tracks and on the states three federally-recognized Indian reservations: the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas in Livingston in East Texas, the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas on the Rio Grande River on the U.S.-Mexico border, and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in El Paso.

The survey–conducted by Baselice & Associates between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, and commissioned by Win For Texas, which supports legalization of gaming in the state–included 1,000 registered voters, and 82 percent of Texans surveyed think voters should decide if slot machines should be allowed by putting it on a statewide constitutional amendment election, reported the Houston Business Journal. “If it’s on the ballot, then it wins,” said pollster Mike Baselice. “The support is shared by a large majority of voters regardless of their partisan background or make-up.”

The poll showed that 57 percent of Republican voters, who also attend church, supported the proposal.

While no bills have been filed in the Legislature this session to address the issue, one is forthcoming, according to Michael Lavigne, spokesman for Win For Texas, reported the Journal. Win For Texas thinks slot machines at Texas racetracks and Indian reservations could bring in $1 billion a year in direct state tax revenue, more than 70,000 new jobs and more than $8.5 billion in economic activity to Texas.
