The Battle for Ontario: Akwesasne Versus Six Nations in Today’s Ontario Lacrosse Association Championships

The Creator’s gift will be brilliantly demonstrated this weekend. On Saturday, August 4, the Akwesasne Indians and the Six Nations Rebels will meet in the first game of a best of five series to determine the 2012 Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) Junior B champion.  The winner takes home the J.A. MacDonald Trophy.

The defending champion Six Nations Rebels advanced to the finals following a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Wallaceburg Red Devils in the fifth and deciding game of the OLA Western Conference Finals July29 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena before 1,400 fans. The Rebels staved off elimination in Game 4, beating the Red Devils 14-12 to force the deciding game.

The offensive juggernaut Akwesasne scored 363 goals in the regular season this season en route to a 19-1 record and the Eastern Conference’s and overall top playoff seed. No other OLA squad scored more than 300 goals.  The Indians avenged their only loss of the regular season by knocking out the Clarington Green Gales three games to one in the OLA Eastern Conference Finals to advance to meet Six Nations for the title.

Akwesasne needs to beat Six Nations to earn a berth in the upcoming Founders Cup tournament, which features the champions of the Canadian Junior B leagues. Four-time and defending Founders Cup champion Six Nations is hosting the event this year, so the Rebels will be playing for that title too.

Game 1 starts at 8 p.m. at the Gaylord Powless Arena in Ohsweken. Game 2 will be played at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Six Nations. The final three games are scheduled at A’nowara’ko:wa Arena, home of the Akwesasne Indians.

Congrats from all of Indian Country to both Akwesasne and Six Nations on their remarkable seasons. It’s been a fantastic year for lacrosse, with the Iroquois Nationals U19 men’s squad recently returning from Finland with the bronze medal—and a victory over the U.S. This battle for Ontario, leading into the 40th anniversary Founders Cup tournament August 14-19, will add to the excitement of and passion for the Creator’s game. Let’s play!
