Trahant Tells PBS NewsHour How Important Native Vote Is in Montana

Mark Trahant, an Indian Country Today Media Network contributor, tells PBS NewsHour just how important the Native American vote is in a state like Montana, where they make up eight percent of the population.

He outlines how Sen. John Tester won his seat six years ago by just one percent, arguably thanks to the Native vote, and how Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau, Mandan/Hidatsa, became the first American Indian woman to win a statewide election.

Trahant also talks about the affect seeing people like Juneau get elected has on reservation youth.”It’s also about a young girl looking at a Native American holding office and thinking ‘I can do that,'” he says in the video.
