The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has announced a schedule change for one of its northern hearings and reiterated the list for the others leading up to the National Event in June.
The Fort Smith hearing in Northwest Territories will be held on Friday May 6 instead of April 29, the TRC announced.
“These Hearings will provide an opportunity for residential school survivors to share with the commission and Canada the unique experiences of children who attended residential schools in Canada’s north,” the TRC said in its release. The full schedule can be accessed here.
Commissioner Marie Wilson, a longtime resident of the Northern Territories, is the lead for these Hearings and the Northern National Event.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established as a result of the 2007 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Its mandate is to inform all Canadians about what happened in the 150 year history of the Residential Schools, and guide and inspire a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual understanding and respect.
