UN Special Rapporteur Anaya to Attend Arizona Conference on Indigenous Rights Beginning Today

James Anaya, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, will be on hand in Arizona for a two day conference titled “The Significance of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.”

The conference, that kicks off today, is organized by the University of Arizona in cooperation with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and is supported by the Ford Foundation, the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission and the National Congress of American Indians.

The conference will feature panels on specific topics that include language, sacred sites, health, education, self-government and land and resources. These panels will include prominent speakers on each topic that include Carrie Dann, executive director, Western Shoshone Defense Project; Dr. Suzan Shown Harjo, president The Morning Star Institute; Jefferson Keel, NCAI president; and Rex Lee Jim, Navajo Nation vice president.
