University of South Dakota to Honor Native American Graduates

The University of South Dakota (USD) will hold a Graduate Honoring Ceremony May 6 to recognize the accomplishments of Native American students who are “graduating in a manner representative of their cultural heritage,” according to a news release.

At a dinner and ceremony graduates will wear regalia, and hear honor songs performed by Elk Soldier, a renowned drum group. Wayne H. White Wolf-Evans, profesor emeritus in the USD School of Education and Danielle Ducheneaux, outreach services coordinator at the Presentation Lakota Campus, will be keynote speakers for the ceremony.

Evans earned both a master’s degree in educational psychology in 1968, and a doctorate in educational psychology and personnel services in 1971, from USD and has been involved with Indian education for 49 years. He has been an elementary school teacher, principal, director of the USD Upward Bound Program and Native American Student Services at USD. Evans is a member of the Teton Sicangu Lakota Tribe.

“Evans continues to serve the campus, community and state through his sustained effort to improve education and quality of life for Native Americans,” states the press release.

Ducheneaux graduated from USD with a bachelor’s in contemporary media and journalism more recently, in 2010. She also completed minors in American Indian studies and art. She is a member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and served as the regional director for the Great Plains area for MyTribeTV right after graduation.

The Graduate Honoring Ceremony will be held May 6 at 5 p.m. in the Freedom Forum Conference Room, which is in the Al Neuharth Media Center on the USD campus.
