Cherokee Nation Honors Fallen Soldiers for Memorial Day

Memorial Day celebrations are planned throughout Indian country this weekend to honor tribal veterans and the sacrifices they made serving in the United States military at a rate higher than any other ethnicity per capita.

The Cherokee Nation will feature its own celebration honoring their Cherokee warriors on Friday at 3:30 p.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cherokee Nation Veterans Center and Warrior Memorial in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

“This Memorial Day, we encourage you to honor the men and women who fought and died for our freedoms,” said U.S. Navy veteran and Cherokee Nation Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden. “Their sacrifices and their commitment should be honored with absolute respect and admiration. It is only proper that our Cherokee warriors hold an esteemed place in our tribe and within our families.”

During the ceremony there will be a raising of the flags, performances by the Cherokee National Youth Choir and remarks by Principal Chief Bill John Baker and Crittenden.

Tours of the new Veterans Center and a small reception will also be held following the ceremony.
