Video Spotlight: Scenes From Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair

In it’s 10th year, the purpose of the Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair (ONAYLF), according to Mary Linn, is to “encourage young people to learn their Native languages and to use them in daily life. It’s also to encourage those who are learning it to keep going. It’s a really hard task and sometimes a big burden is put on their shoulders to keep the languages going,” she told NewsOK.com. Linn is the associate curator of Native American Languages at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History where the event was held.

About 600 Native American students representing more than 20 Oklahoma tribes gathered at the museum in Norman, Oklahoma for the event in April.

The theme for this year’s language fair was “I Am My Language.” Check out some videos from the event we found below:
